COEXIST: The U.S. Has More Immigrants Than Any Other Country

By NUSA

A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that the U.S. has more than 40 million immigrants, more than any other country in the world. It also takes in about one-fifth of the world’s total migrants.

The report looks at trends from 1960 to 2015. According to the report in 2015 the U.S. hit a record high of 43.2 million immigrants accounting for 13.4% of the population, the same number that is used by the Center of Immigration Studies. This is four times higher than in 1960 when only 9.7 million immigrants lived in the U.S., accounting for only 5.4% of the population.

“Since 1965, when U.S. immigration laws replaced a national quota system, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. has more than quadrupled,” the Pew study noted.

According to the report about a quarter of the immigrants are here illegally and make up around 3.4% of the population.

In 2014 immigrants made up 17% of the total civilian labor force but the report also concluded that immigrants do not make up a majority of workers in any U.S. industry.

The report also noted that almost half of Americans (49%) say that immigration in the U.S. should be decreased while only 15% said it should be increased.
